How to use it
Fill in the title and start time — everything else is optional. Scanning the code offers to add the event to the phone's calendar, with the details filled in. The person scanning confirms it; nothing is written to their calendar without them.
Put it on a poster, a ticket, an invitation or the last slide of a talk. It removes the step where somebody means to add your event later and never does.
Times are local, deliberately
The event is encoded in what iCalendar calls floating local time — seven o'clock means seven o'clock on whatever phone scans it, with no time zone attached.
For a physical event this is what you want. A poster on a wall is scanned by people who will be standing in that same building, and a code that shifted the time for a visitor whose phone was still set to another country's zone would be actively wrong.
The trade-off is that this is not right for an online event with attendees in several countries. For that, put the time and zone in the description in plain words, or send a proper calendar invitation by email instead — an invitation also updates itself if the time changes, which a printed code can never do.
Keep the description brief
Descriptions are where these codes get too dense to scan comfortably. A title, a time and a venue produce a code that reads easily from a poster; three paragraphs of programme notes produce one that needs good light and a steady hand.
If there is a lot to say, put a short line in the description and a link to the full details — or use the Text & URL page to make a second code pointing at the event page, and print the two side by side.
Frequently asked questions
Does it add the event to my calendar automatically?
No. Scanning opens a prompt showing the event, and the person chooses whether to save it. Neither iOS nor Android will write to a calendar without confirmation.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Both recognise the vEvent payload from the camera and offer to create the event. Presentation differs — iOS shows a calendar preview, Android usually routes it through the calendar app — but both work.
What time zone does the event use?
None, deliberately. The time is encoded as floating local time, so it reads the same on every phone. That is correct for a physical event, and wrong for an online one across time zones — for those, state the zone in the description.
Can I update the event after printing the code?
No. The details are in the pattern itself, so a change means a new code. If the details might move, encode a link to a page you control instead and put the detail there.
Can I add a reminder or make it repeat?
The iCalendar format supports both, but phone support for alarms and recurrence rules arriving via QR is patchy enough that this page leaves them out rather than producing a code that half works.
Why does the code get denser when I add a description?
Every character adds modules to the grid. Title, time and venue keep it comfortably scannable from a poster; long descriptions do not. Link to the details instead.
