How to use it
Enter the number in full international form — country code first, as
+919876543210. Scanning brings up the dialler with the number ready, and
the person scanning taps to call. The call is never placed automatically.
This is the simplest code on the site and one of the most reliably useful: a taxi number on a hotel card, a support line on a piece of equipment, an emergency contact on a site notice, a “call for service” sticker on a vending machine. It works on every phone with a camera and needs no app.
Always include the country code
This is the one thing that goes wrong. A number written as 098765 43210
works for someone whose phone is registered in the same country and fails for everyone
else — and a printed code is exactly the situation where you cannot know where the
person scanning it is from.
The leading + matters too. It is what tells the dialler the country code
follows, rather than an area code or a trunk prefix. Write
+91 98765 43210, not 0091 and not
91 on its own.
Spaces, brackets and dashes are fine to type here — they are stripped before encoding, because they are how people read numbers rather than part of them.
An extension is worth checking
Extensions can be encoded, usually as a comma or a ;ext= suffix, but
handling varies more than anything else on this page: some diallers pause and send the
digits as tones, some show them and wait, some drop them silently.
If you need one, generate the code and test the actual call on both an iPhone and an Android phone before printing. If it does not work reliably, print the main number in the code and the extension as text beside it.

Does it call the number automatically?
No. Scanning opens the dialler with the number entered, and the person taps to call. Placing a call without confirmation is blocked by both iOS and Android, which is what makes these safe to print in public.
Does it work on every phone?
This is the most widely supported QR payload there is. Any phone with a camera app that reads QR codes will handle a tel: link, and it needs no app installed.
What format should the number be in?
Full international, starting with +. Write +919876543210. Spaces, brackets and dashes are stripped automatically, so type it however is easiest to check.
Can I include an extension?
It can be encoded, but dialler behaviour varies enough that it is worth testing on real phones before printing. If it is unreliable, put the main number in the code and the extension in text alongside it.
Can I use a toll-free or premium number?
Yes, the code does not care what kind of number it is. Test premium and shortcode numbers on real handsets first, since a few carriers treat them differently when the call originates from a link.
